SUMMARY:After the 2012 Games: Legacy and Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:The London 2012 Olympics have been designed to be the most sustainable Olympics to date. From planning to execution\, London 2012 aims to align with the 'One Planet Living®’ concept. Is that true? Is it possible ? A couple of weeks ago LOCOG sparked controversy by granting the contract to print Olympics tickets to Weldon\, Williams & Lick of Fort Smith\, Arkansas. The tickets will be shipped 4\,500 miles to the UK to be distributed to ticketholders afterwards. Lawrence Webb\, UKIP's London Mayoral candidate\, branded this decision "a kick in the guts to British firms". According to London 2012\, 95% of the contracts are going to local businesses. But what about the international community ? Or should Olympic Games benefit only local communities ? … The Olympics is the major global event setting examples for business practices. The above questions are important ones but they are definitely not the only ones to ask. Please join us in March to ask your questions on the London 2012 Olympics sustainable legacy to decision-making and stakeholders: Felicity Hartnett\, Sustainability Partnerships Manager\, London 2012 Richard Jackson\, Head of Environmental Sustainability\, University College London Samantha Heath\, CEO\, London Sustainability Exchange David Smith\, Community Organiser\, London Citizens Attend this event to learn about the challenges involved in making this global event sustainable\, engage in dialogue with our speakers and form your own opinion about London 2012's sustainable legacy. SUMMARY:Gilda Darlas - the founder of the Universal Education Model
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening talk from Gilda Darlas - the founder of the Universal Education Model which aims to teach young children empathy\, compassion and wisdom to eliminate the root causes of conflict. Gilda is bringing her model into UK schools and would like to share her plans with you and explore how you may support her with this effort. We will host an evening talk where Gilda will present the model\, the plans for the UK expansion and take questions from the audience. Please read on for event details and more on Gilda's programme. We look forward to seeing you there! The Model: Gilda's model aims to tackle intolerance and conflict that arise from moral and cultural relativism. Many conflicts from large-scale ones to smaller family arguments arise because people believe in their idea of truth and are disinterested in differing perspectives. This programme aims to instil empathy\, compassion and reflective thinking in young children. It builds children's inter-subjective social and emotional skills in the classroom and enables children to make their own decisions based on relations to one another. Impact: 4200 students\, 633 teachers\, 743 parents have benefitted from the programme in 6 countries. SUMMARY:Stories from the Green Economy
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by the Masters in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability and the Masters in Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation at the Blekinge Institute of Technology On December 1st 2010 Net Impact London will address the Government's call for a low-carbon growth as an essential path out of recession. We will hear from three leaders in sustainability whose work demonstrates that the transition towards a sustainable economy is not only underway but bringing win-win-win scenarios for those government departments\, corporations and NGOs willing to embrace them. On November 2nd 2010 Chris Huhne\, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change argued that the need to urgently renew and decarbonise our energy supply\, and to upgrade our ageing and inefficient buildings will not only provide an economic boost\, but also help to create a more balanced\, resilient and sustainable British economy. Click here to listen to Chris Huhne's speech during a recent event at the LSE. Our panel of speakers share how they are already contributing to the UK green economy and how you can do the same. SCHEDULE 6.30pm to 7.00pm: Registration and Networking 7.00pm to 8.15 pm: Panel and Q&A 8.15pm to 9.00pm: Networking Cocktail ABOUT THE SPEAKERS David Collins inspires business leaders to place sustainability as a value that drives the behaviour and actions of their organisations. At a policy level\, David developed a sustainability approach for the £5bn UK cement and concrete sector. It won the CBI 2010 Environmental Initiative Award. David founded Future Conversations and works on engaging people in sustainability at all levels within organisations. He’ll share stories of clients engaging with sustainability on their own terms. Kirsty Schneeberger has attended the UN climate change negotiations as a UK Youth Delegate since 2008 calling on Governments to put the principle of Intergenerational Equity and sustainable development at the heart of their decision-making\,asking the poignant question: How old will you be in 2050? She now works with the Department of Energy and Climate Change to establish the Youth Advisory Panel\, which brings the voice of young people to the table of policy-makers and Ministers. Her work as a coordinator of the UK Youth Climate Coalition and involving young people in the environmental political decision-making process has recently led to her being Honoured as an MBE for Services to Environmental Conservation. Luke Nicholson is Director at More Associates where he designs commercial and policy strategies that help everyday people to effectively address climate change. He advises government\, corporations and NGOs on putting resource efficiency and sustainable profitability at the heart of what they do by identifying opportunities to align business objectives with social and environmental outcomes and deliver innovation to address those opportunities. This goes beyond compliance and risk-management\, turning necessary cost into competitive advantage.
