Marzipan Management and Styrofoam Leadership

Two weeks after our April 10th event on ‘Building a Culture of Sustainability’, I find myself continuing to ponder some of the interesting dilemmas that came up in conversation.  We had a great crowd that was itching to engage (perhaps not surprising given that the topic was engagement) and wonderful speakers.  We had some really interesting questions which challenged our panel to consider everything from how to motivate and inspire the middle management layer in large global corporates to whether a company has ever successfully implemented a sustainability strategy without the support of senior leadership….

It wasn’t a new question, […]

Sustainability Careers

Did you miss our March event on careers in sustainability? Here are a few top tips from our panel:

  • Spend 10% of your day networking. Those connections are key to a successful career
  • It’s increasingly hard to differentiate yourself academically – fitting in with the culture of the business is the key variable.
  • To be a change maker you must know when to push and when to pull back – work with the system to make a difference.

One last tip from Shannon Houde, Walk of Life Consulting, to market yourself effectively – take the time to map your top five skills against […]

Overcoming Barriers to Sustainable Investing – Recap

Thanks to everyone who joined the last event – it was a packed house with great speakers, challenging questions, and frank discussion, which continued on afterwards during drinks at the lovely Bedales Wine Bar.

We covered a lot of ground. Although we are seeing signs of progress with more and more investors taking ESG factors into consideration, it’s clear that there remain many barriers and challenges to sustainable investing.

- Asset owners tend to have a longer-term time horizon and have been the primary drivers of sustainable investing; however smaller pension funds have limited negotiating power and end up being […]

October’s ‘Impact at Workshop’: Relevance, Communication & Impact

Thank you to all of the Net Impacters who participated in October’s Impact at Workshop. We couldn’t have managed without the insights from all of our attendees who tackled dynamic and challenging questions with creativity and inspiration. In the end, we may have come up with more questions than solutions!

Here are a few of the themes which emerged from the evening:

1) The importance (and difficulty) of integrating sustainability policy into business strategy. To maximise on the impact of a sustainability plan, partnerships, community engagement and environmental policy need to be RELEVANT to your business. From a consultancy or NGO perspective this means developing a thorough understanding […]

Outcomes of our New Year’s Social and ‘Hot Topics for 2012′

Our January 2012 social event was held at a nice old pub on Marylebone High Street where we focused on networking, discussion of hot topics in sustainability, and a sustainability focused pub quiz.  We were glad to see new faces at the event, and the usual mixture of interesting, passionate Net Impact attendees made this night most enjoyable.

Congratulations to the quiz winner Connie Low!!

Our ‘hot topics’ break-out discussions, covered the following topics:

Climate Change: Is it a Personal, Political, or Private Responsibility?

There was much debate on our group about who needs to take responsibility for dealing with climate change. Several people […]

Spots of Time Guest Post

Imagine sung to the tune of the Twelve Days of Christmas:

“40 skills a swapping, 21 Net Impacters Networking, 10 Mixtape songs a singing, 3 mince pies eaten (by me), 2 speakers speaking, one Christmas tree…”

That’s the song-based summary of Tinsel, Time and Treats event run by Net Impact, London earlier this month. The event brought together professionals from a range of sectors for a festive gathering and for Spots of Time and fellow social enterprise Ecomodo, a chance to share what we get up to. Both of our organisations are about giving and sharing; for Ecomodo it’s about making […]
