The third in Net Impact London Professional’s 2009 “In Depth” event series.

Through the kind sponsorship of Trucost we’re delighted to invite London-based professionals to join us on 5th November 2009 at the Hub, Kings Cross.  This will be a genuinely stimulating discussion for:

·      sustainability professionals developing the business case in a cost-conscious environment

·      professionals who need to understand how to calculate and manage their carbon footprint

·      company secretary and corporate accountability executives

·      corporate accountants

·      and anyone who needs to use quantitative measures to explain, plan and promote a sustainable business programme.

We will be showcasing for the first time, the efforts of two organisations – one private, one public – in this space: Northern Foods and the Highways Agency.

Our chair is Paul Druckman who has recently taken on a leadership role at Trucost, and will bring to bear his long experience with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.

The audience Q&A, with interactive voting, will be MC’d by Oliver Turnbull.  Oliver’s first job as a stand-up comedian was insufficiently entertaining, so he now works as a consultant at AtosOrigin.  He is moonlighting for Net Impact, as a younger, prettier version of Peter Snow, ready to put interviewees on the spot and give energetic, on-the-spot analysis as the votes roll in.

Speakers:

·      Oliver Turnbull, AtosOrigin, MC

·      Paul Druckman, Trucost, Chair

·      Lisa Scott, Highways Agency, Keynote Speaker

·      Paula Widdowson, Northern Foods, Keynote Speaker

·      Jessica Fries, Accounting for Sustainability, Panel Participant

·      Alessandro Muti, Green Mind, Panel Participant

In presenting their case studies, the speakers will answer the following three questions:

·      How and why have you embraced accounting for sustainability?

·      What have the challenges been?

·      What next? Is this enough?

The expert panel will then discuss the presentations, in the light of their own experience, and draw out differences and similarities between the two.  In particular, they will be looking at the sector context – public and private, and the impact of the economic downturn.

Net Impact London Professional is excited to provide an audience voting mechanism to get “real time” feedback on a number of key questions.  Oliver Turnbull will draw on his years of experience with thrill-seeking crowds to facilitate this part of the event in a light-hearted manner.  The results will then be used to inform the summing up by the Chair.

An event summary will be made available via the Net Impact London Professional website.

The event will end with an opportunity to network amongst the delegates, with refreshments kindly sponsored by Trucost.

NB – This event is one of Net Impact London Professional’s in-depth discussions of more complex/technical issues.  As such, the intended audience is individuals with some previous experience of corporate accountability, carbon inventories/footprints,  financial/management accounting  and their contribution to a sustainability business case.   We strongly encourage people who can make a contribution to the three main issues described above.  If you would like to attend please send an email to london.

The London Net Impact Professional Chapter in partnership with the HUB invites you to view a screening of The End of the Line, the new ‘wake-up call to the world’.

The film examines the impact of overfishing on our oceans and the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi.  It highlights the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish, and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans.

The documentary is filmed across the world, from the Straits of Gibraltar to the coasts of Senegal and Alaska to the Tokyo fish market; and features top scientists, indigenous fishermen and fisheries enforcement officials.

In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food.

Guest appearances by the Director/Reporter to be confirmed.
